Snapchat caption on video: add, recreate or remove the text bar

Add the Snapchat text bar to a Snap or a camera-roll video, recreate it in CapCut, Canva or InShot, and why a burned-in bar can't be removed (Oct 2026).

Published 21 Oct 2026

The Snapchat caption is the plain text bar: white text, centered, on a see-through dark strip that runs the full width of the screen. In Snapchat you get it by tapping the text tool, the T icon, on the Preview screen after you take a Snap, typing, and moving the bar where you want it. To put it on a video you already have, open the video from Memories or the Camera Roll tab inside Snapchat, edit it, add the text, and export it.

Outside Snapchat, people recreate the bar in CapCut, Canva or InShot with two layers: a black strip at partial opacity and white centered text on top. And if you need to remove one: once the bar is part of an exported video, there is no clean way to take it off. Keep the original video. Each of these steps is below.

What the Snapchat text bar is

The bar is the plainest of the styles in Snapchat's text tool. Snapchat's add text to a Snap help page, read on 21 October 2026, says you can add captions "in all different styles and sizes" and switch style with the options shown above the keyboard. The page doesn't give the styles names, and Snapchat doesn't publish the bar's exact font or opacity, so the values later in this post are our starting points, not Snapchat's spec.

The look works because it is quiet. The dark strip makes white text readable over any background, it covers only a thin slice of the picture, and it reads as a caption rather than a design element. That is why people want it on videos that never went through Snapchat.

How to add the caption bar in Snapchat

  1. Take a photo or video Snap.
  2. On the Preview screen, tap the T icon.
  3. Type your caption. If it shows in a different style, tap through the style options above the keyboard until you get the plain bar.
  4. Tap outside the keyboard, then drag the bar up or down the frame.
  5. Send it, post it to your Story, or save it.

From the same help page, a few extras: you can change the color with the slider, bold or italicize selected words with your phone's text formatting, mention friends with @, and tap the timer icon in the caption tool to set when the text appears. For text that changes during a video, the Timeline Editor has a Caption option: tap Caption, type and style the text, tap Done, and drag the caption's layer to choose when it shows. You can add several captions this way, each timed to its own part of the video. Snapchat can also write captions from your audio with the quotation mark icon in the text tool; our post on Snapchat auto captions covers how that works and its limits.

How to put a Snapchat caption on a saved or camera-roll video

Snapchat lets you edit videos you didn't just record, from Memories.

A Snap saved in Memories. Snapchat's Memories editing help says to swipe up from the Camera screen to open Memories, press and hold on a Snap, and tap the option you want; choose Edit. Add the text bar as above, save, and then, to get a file on your phone, press and hold the Snap again in Memories, tap Export and choose where to save it.

A video from your phone's gallery. Swipe up to Memories and open the Camera Roll tab, where Snapchat shows photos and videos from your device. Press and hold the video to see what you can do with it. If you want camera-roll videos to sit inside Memories, Snapchat's help gives a path for that: Settings, then 'My App', then 'Memories', then 'Import Snaps from Camera Roll'. Once a video is in Memories, edit and export it the same way.

Two things to expect. Snapchat may show a "Media Upload" label on Snaps made from media you captured earlier, and its help center says that label can't be removed. And check your Save Button setting under Settings, 'My App', 'Memories', which decides whether saved Snaps go to Memories, to your phone's Camera Roll, or both.

How to recreate the Snapchat caption in CapCut, Canva or InShot

If the video is going to TikTok, Reels or Shorts, or you're editing on a computer, it's easier to rebuild the bar in your editor. The look is two layers.

SettingOur starting value for a 1080 x 1920 video
Bar colorBlack
Bar opacityAbout 50 to 60 percent
Bar widthThe full width of the frame
Bar heightAbout 1.6 times the text height
TextWhite, centered, one line
FontA plain sans-serif in a regular or medium weight
Text sizeAbout 40 to 50 pixels cap height

Snapchat's own font for this bar isn't documented. Kapwing's Snapchat guide, dated 2 September 2026, says Snapchat's generated captions appear to use Arial, white on black, which fits the plain look. Arial, Helvetica, Roboto or Inter all get close.

CapCut. Add a text layer, type the caption, set it white and centered, then look in the text style options for a background or label setting, set it black and lower its opacity. If the background only hugs the words, add a black shape or solid color overlay instead, stretch it across the frame, lower its opacity and put it under the text layer. For a series of captions that follow speech, our CapCut subtitles guide covers auto captions, which you can then restyle the same way.

Canva. Select the whole text box, open Effects and choose Background, then set Color to black and adjust Transparency, Spread and Roundness. Set Roundness to zero for the square Snapchat edge. A Supademo walkthrough of Canva, updated in April 2026, describes the same four settings. Canva's background hugs each line, so for a full-width bar draw a black rectangle across the frame instead and lower its transparency.

InShot and other phone editors. The same recipe works anywhere: white centered text, plus either the text tool's own background option or a black rectangle overlay at partial opacity behind it. Our guide to adding text to a video covers text overlays across common editors.

How to remove a Snapchat caption from a video

It depends on where the caption is.

  • Still in the Snapchat editor. Tap the text and clear what you typed before you send or save. In the Timeline Editor, select the caption and choose Delete.
  • Already sent, posted or exported. The bar is now part of the picture. Snapchat's help doesn't describe a way to strip text from a saved or exported Snap, so treat any downloaded copy as final.
  • On a video someone sent you. The same applies. The text is pixels in the frame, not a separate track you can switch off.

People try three workarounds, and each costs something. You can crop the video to cut the bar out, which loses that slice of the picture. You can cover it with a blur, a sticker or a new bar of your own, which hides it but doesn't remove it. AI object-removal tools can paint over small text with mixed results, and a full-width bar over moving video is one of the hardest cases for them.

The only clean fix is the original file. Before adding text in Snapchat, make sure the untouched video is saved to your Camera Roll, and keep it after you post.

Timed spoken captions in a bar style

The Snapchat bar holds one line you type. If you want captions that follow what is said, line by line, in a similar boxed look, that is a different job. Our page on subtitles with a black background covers boxed caption styles for spoken video. In CapsAI, the closest free styles are Newsroom, white capitals on black boxes with the spoken word in yellow, and Tommy Soft, cream text on dark rounded boxes. Neither is a full-width Snapchat bar, and the box color and opacity can't be changed, but both put a dark box behind every caption automatically and burn it into the MP4.

What to do next

For a single line on a Snap, use Snapchat's own T tool, and save the original first. For a bar-style look on a video you'll post elsewhere, build it in your editor with the values above. For a whole video of spoken captions in a boxed style, try one clip: new CapsAI accounts get 3 free minutes, packs start from $4 (₹49 in India, €4 in the euro area), and watermark-free export comes with every paid pack.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put a Snapchat caption on a video?

For a new Snap, tap the T icon on the Preview screen, type, and pick the plain bar from the style options above the keyboard. For a saved video, open it from Memories or the Camera Roll tab in Snapchat, edit it, add the text, and export it from Memories to your phone.

Can I add the Snapchat text bar to a video from my camera roll?

Yes. Swipe up to Memories, open the Camera Roll tab and press and hold the video for options, or import it into Memories first via Settings, My App, Memories, Import Snaps from Camera Roll. Snapchat may add a Media Upload label to Snaps made from earlier media, and that label cannot be removed.

How do I make the Snapchat caption bar in CapCut or Canva?

Use two layers: a black bar across the full width at about 50 to 60 percent opacity, and white centered text in a plain sans-serif on top. In Canva the text Effects panel has a Background option with Transparency and Roundness; in CapCut use the text background setting or a black shape overlay.

How do I remove a Snapchat caption from a video?

Only before you save or send it: clear the text, or delete the caption in the Timeline Editor. Once the video is exported or posted, the bar is part of the picture, so cropping, covering or AI removal are the only options and each loses something. Keep the original file.

What font does the Snapchat caption use?

Snapchat does not publish it. Kapwing's Snapchat guide from September 2026 says Snapchat's generated captions appear to use Arial, white on a black background. Arial, Helvetica, Roboto or Inter in a regular weight get close to the look.

Can CapsAI make captions in the Snapchat bar style?

Not the exact full-width bar. CapsAI's free Newsroom and Tommy Soft styles put a dark box behind each caption and follow the speech, burned into the MP4, but the box color and opacity cannot be changed.
