Subtitle generators on Reddit: what 161 threads recommend (2026)

We counted 161 Reddit threads (2015 to Oct 2026): CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Subtitle Edit lead, with the reasons Redditors give.

Published 19 Oct 2026

Reddit's most recommended subtitle tools are mostly video editors and free tools, not standalone subtitle generators. We read 161 public threads about making subtitles or captions for a video, posted between May 2015 and 13 October 2026, and counted the tools other users suggested. CapCut was recommended in 51 threads, Premiere Pro in 42, DaVinci Resolve in 35, Subtitle Edit in 33, YouTube's own automatic captions in 27 and OpenAI's Whisper in 24.

Two concerns run through the threads. One is money: 48 of the 161 opening posts asked for something free, and 21 threads contain a post saying CapCut's auto captions had become paid or limited, the earliest in our sample from August 2024. The other is accuracy, which came up in 78 threads. CapsAI, which publishes this post, was not named in any of the 161 threads or in the 2,456 search results we collected.

How we counted

  • Searches. On 19 October 2026 we pulled 30 Reddit search feeds: ten site-wide queries such as "subtitle generator", "auto captions app" and "what do you use for subtitles", and 20 searches inside subreddits including r/VideoEditing, r/NewTubers, r/editors, r/Filmmakers, r/podcasting, r/premiere, r/davinciresolve and r/CapCut. Each feed returns up to 100 posts by relevance across all time, 2,456 unique posts in total.
  • Shortlist. We read every title and opening post and kept 180 threads about choosing or using a caption tool. Most ask which tool to use, how to make a caption style or how to fix a workflow; three share a tool or a list instead, and we kept them because the replies still recommend tools.
  • Inclusion rule. A thread counts if at least one reply came from someone other than the poster. Sixteen had no replies and three turned out to be about something else, which left 161 threads and 1,947 comments. Three questions were cross-posted to two subreddits; each copy counts, since the replies differ.
  • What counts as a recommendation. A tool counts once per thread when another user suggests it or says they use it for the job. Questions, passing references and the poster's own mentions do not count, nor do replies from people who said they make or sell the tool or that carried referral links. Complaints and warnings are counted separately. We read every reply that named a tool and hand-labelled the 271 where the name match alone would have miscounted.
  • Sources. Comments for 59 threads came from Reddit's own feeds. Reddit refused our other requests and the feeds allowed about one request a minute, so the other 102 threads came from the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit data, with removed and deleted comments dropped.
  • Limits. Search stops at 100 results per query, so this is a large sample, not a census. Threads age: 113 of the 161 are from 2024 or later, and a 2020 answer may describe a tool that has since changed. Some replies read like marketing that nobody disclosed, and we could not check who wrote them.

What Redditors praise and complain about

CapCut is both the most recommended tool and the most criticized: 22 threads carry a complaint or warning about it, against 10 for DaVinci Resolve and 8 for Premiere Pro. In August 2024 a poster in r/CapCut said it had started charging for auto captions, and in May 2026 another said free caption generations had dropped from nine to two. In October 2024 an r/VideoEditing moderator posted a notice arguing that, with CapCut's captions behind a paywall, no easy free caption tool was left. CapCut's own pages disagree: its caption tool page still calls speech-to-text free of charge, while its help center, in a Standard vs Pro article dated 2 April 2026, lists auto captions under Pro (both read via a proxy render on 19 October 2026). Our CapCut auto captions post sets out what each page says.

Premiere Pro is recommended by editors who already use it, and criticized by some of the same people. In a 2021 r/editors thread, several replies called its caption panel buggy. The newer complaint is accuracy: in a September 2025 r/premiere thread, the poster said it struggled with UK accents, and an early reply suggested Subtitle Edit with Whisper.

DaVinci Resolve gets praise for subtitle tracks and styling, with one catch that 10 threads point out: automatic subtitles need the paid Studio version. A December 2024 poster asked whether Studio was worth buying just for subtitles. Free-edition users point to the open-source AutoSubs plugin (7 threads); one April 2025 reply liked it but still did a manual pass. Our DaVinci Resolve subtitles guide covers both routes.

Subtitle Edit, Whisper and YouTube are the free routes. Subtitle Edit can run Whisper for speech-to-text, and the two often come up together: Whisper is also recommended in 15 of the 33 Subtitle Edit threads. Some Whisper replies warn that it takes setup. The oldest trick in the data is YouTube: upload privately, let it caption the video, fix the text and download the file, as one September 2023 reply laid out. A 2020 reply, to a hospital video editor with a budget, called that trick corner-cutting and unprofessional.

On accuracy, replies rarely crown a winner. In a September 2025 r/editors thread asking which tool is most accurate, one reply said accuracy was much the same across the main tools and the real difference was how fast you could fix the pacing; another found Resolve better than Premiere on accents.

These topics came up across the 161 threads, in the post or the replies:

  • Accuracy, or correcting the draft: 78 threads (48.4%)
  • Caption styles and animation: 68 (42.2%)
  • Free limits, paywalls and trials: 65 (40.4%)
  • SRT or other subtitle files: 57 (35.4%)
  • Prices and subscriptions: 49 (30.4%)
  • Translation: 35 (21.7%)
  • Watermarks: 28 (17.4%), in 8 of them through a reply from someone promoting their own tool
  • Running locally, offline or open source: 28 (17.4%)
  • Editing on a phone: 24 (14.9%)
  • Human captioning services: 17 (10.6%)
  • Hindi, Hinglish, Punjabi or other Indian languages: 4 (2.5%)

A topic coming up is not always a complaint. The counts come from keyword patterns saved with the data.

Free vs paid recommendations

We read the 59 opening posts that use the word "free"; 48 ask for something free, some adding "or cheap". In those 48 threads, the most suggested tools were CapCut (15 threads), DaVinci Resolve and Whisper (13 each), Subtitle Edit (10), YouTube's automatic captions (9) and Premiere Pro (8). Not all of those answers are free. Premiere needs an Adobe subscription, as replies point out, DaVinci's automatic subtitles need Studio, and whether CapCut's captions were free depended on when the reply was written; today CapCut's own pages disagree on it. The routes that really are free take more work: Subtitle Edit with Whisper, AutoSubs on the free edition of Resolve, or YouTube's private-upload trick.

Paid picks show up when people want speed or styled clips: Descript (21 threads), Vizard (14), Opus Clip (12), VEED (9) and the Captions app (9). For human captions, Rev appeared in 12 threads. A January 2020 reply priced it at a dollar a minute; on 19 October 2026 Rev's pricing page listed human captions from USD 1.99 a minute.

Where Reddit and our roundup differ

Our AI subtitle generator roundup compared ten tools on free plan, watermark, files and price, from each vendor's own page. Reddit's answers differ in three ways.

  1. Reddit recommends what people already have. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Subtitle Edit, YouTube and Whisper are five of the top six, and none is a web subtitle generator. Of the tools in our roundup, VEED and the Captions app appear in 9 threads each, Kapwing and Clipchamp in 8, Canva in 5, and HappyScribe and Maestra in one each.
  2. Reddit's answers age. In one r/VideoEditing thread, a December 2023 reply says CapCut's auto captions are in the free version and an August 2024 reply says they are not free anymore. Check the date before you act on a reply. Our desktop vs online comparison has current facts for the desktop tools.
  3. Reddit has gaps. Only 4 threads mention an Indian language. One, from July 2026, asked which app to use for Hinglish auto captions because Instagram's Edits app had started captioning in Hindi. On 19 October 2026 it had one visible reply, which said Edits makes a lot of mistakes.

Where CapsAI fits, and where it does not

CapsAI publishes this post, and no thread in our data mentions it.

It fits if you want styled captions burned into a short clip without installing an editor, and you would rather pay once than subscribe. You upload an MP4 or MOV up to 10 minutes, choose the spoken language, correct the draft in the browser and export one MP4. It handles 11 spoken languages, including Hindi, and Hinglish written in Roman script, which the July 2026 thread asked for. CapsAI's English has been used most on Indian English; for other accents, run your own clip through the 3 free minutes and read the draft.

It does not fit if you need an SRT or VTT file, which came up in 57 threads: CapsAI exports only video with the captions burned in. It does not translate (35 threads), takes no video longer than 10 minutes, does not run offline, and covers no languages beyond its 11. It is not free beyond the first 3 minutes.

What to do next

If you already edit in Premiere Pro, Resolve or CapCut, try their built-in captions first and check the draft line by line. If you need a free subtitle file, Reddit's usual answer is Whisper, on its own or inside Subtitle Edit. If you want styled captions burned into a short video and prefer to pay once, try the auto subtitle generator: 3 free minutes to start, packs from $4 (₹49 in India, €4 in the euro area), and watermark-free export comes with every paid pack.

Frequently asked questions

What subtitle generator does Reddit recommend most?

In the 161 threads we counted on 19 October 2026, CapCut was recommended in 51, Premiere Pro in 42, DaVinci Resolve in 35 and Subtitle Edit in 33. CapCut also drew the most complaints, in 22 threads, mostly about its auto captions becoming paid or limited since mid-2024. Most of the top picks are editors people already have rather than standalone subtitle generators.

What is the best free subtitle generator according to Reddit?

Reddit's free answers are Subtitle Edit with OpenAI's Whisper, the AutoSubs plugin for the free edition of DaVinci Resolve, and uploading privately to YouTube to download its automatic captions. All three are free but take more setup than a one-click app. In the 48 threads that asked for something free, CapCut was still the most suggested tool, though posts in 21 threads from August 2024 on say its auto captions became paid or limited.

Are CapCut's auto captions still free?

CapCut's own pages disagree. Its auto caption page, read through a proxy render on 19 October 2026, still calls speech-to-text free of charge, while its help article comparing Standard and Pro, dated 2 April 2026 and read the same way, lists auto captions under Pro. In our data, 21 threads include a post saying CapCut's auto captions became paid or limited, the first in our sample from August 2024 and the latest from 2026. Export a test clip: a Pro prompt at export means the captions in that project need Pro.

Does the free version of DaVinci Resolve make subtitles automatically?

Not built in. Blackmagic's July 2026 manual labels Create Subtitles from Audio as Studio Version Only, and the Studio edition was listed at USD 295 on 19 October 2026. Ten threads in our data warn about this, and free-edition users on Reddit point to the open-source AutoSubs plugin instead. You can still add and style subtitles by hand in the free edition.

How did you count the Reddit threads?

We pulled 30 Reddit search feeds on 19 October 2026, read 2,456 unique posts and shortlisted 180 about making subtitles or captions. A thread counted if someone other than the poster replied, which left 161. A tool counted once per thread when another user suggested or used it, leaving out the poster's own mentions and replies from people selling the tool.

Is CapsAI recommended on Reddit?

No. CapsAI, which publishes this post, was not named in any of the 161 threads or the 2,456 search results we collected. It suits styled captions burned into clips up to 10 minutes, in 11 spoken languages including Hindi, with one-time packs. It does not export SRT files, translate, or run offline, which many Reddit threads ask for.
