There is no single best AI subtitle generator, because the tools split along one line: some give you a subtitle file (SRT or VTT) that you upload to YouTube or a player, and some give you a video with the words burned in for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. As of 18 October 2026, HappyScribe and Maestra are the strongest file tools, ElevenLabs (added 20 October 2026) is the free pick for an SRT or VTT from a clip under 10 minutes, Clipchamp and Adobe Express are the most generous free options, Kapwing and VEED are the best all-in-one editors if you will pay a subscription, and CapsAI is the cheapest way to get a clean burned-in export for a short clip when you do not want a monthly plan.
The table below puts eleven tools side by side: what the free plan gives you, whether the free export has a watermark, whether you get a file, whether it translates, how many languages it claims, and what it costs. Every cell comes from the vendor's own page on the date given, and "not stated" means the page does not say.

The eleven tools, one at a time
VEED
VEED's auto subtitle page (18 October 2026) is titled "Auto Subtitle Generator - Free to Start, 99.9% Accurate", claims 125+ languages, and says plainly that you "Upgrade to a paid plan to subtitle longer videos and download subtitle files". The same page says "A Creator plan starts at $20/month". The free limits themselves are not stated on the page. VEED is a full editor, so it suits people who also trim, resize and brand their clips. See VEED vs CapsAI.
Kapwing
Kapwing's pricing page (18 October 2026) is the most specific free plan in this list: 10 minutes of auto-subtitling, 5 minutes of auto-translation, exports up to 4 minutes long at 720p, 30 minutes of exports a month, 2 GB uploads, and "Unlimited exports with a watermark". Its subtitles page says you can download SRT, VTT and TXT from the editor and lists style templates modeled on TikTok, MrBeast and Hormozi. The Pro plan shows $16 and Business $50, but the page does not label whether those are monthly or annual figures. See Kapwing vs CapsAI.
HappyScribe
HappyScribe's English subtitles page (18 October 2026) says "The first 10 minutes are free and there's no file limit", lists AI subtitles in English and 120+ other languages, and exports SRT, VTT, STL, TXT and editor formats for Premiere, Final Cut and Avid, with burn-in available. Its own accuracy claim is "up to 85-95%" for AI and 99% for human subtitles. The pricing page shows a Basic plan at $17 a month (or $8.50 a month billed yearly) with 120 minutes, Pro at $29 with 600 minutes, extra minutes at $0.20, and human subtitles from $2.00 a minute. Best pick for long videos where you need a file.
Maestra
Maestra's subtitle generator (18 October 2026) runs above the fold with file, link, record and live tabs, claims 125+ languages, and stops you with "Your 1-minute trial has ended. Sign up to export". After sign-up it exports SRT, VTT, SCC, STL, CAP, TXT, TTML and SBV, the widest format list here. Pricing is pay-as-you-go at $12 for 60 credits (60 minutes of subtitles, or 30 translated) or Basic at $39 a month for 360 minutes. The pricing page says nothing about watermarks.
Clipchamp
Microsoft's Clipchamp (18 October 2026) says "The autocaptions feature is free for all Clipchamp users" and that "Transcripts can only be downloaded in SubRip subtitle file format, also known as .srt format". The title claims over 100 languages, and the page notes speech recognition detects one language at a time. There is no stated minute cap and no watermark statement.
Adobe Express
Adobe's add-caption page (18 October 2026) says "There's no limit to how many videos you can add captions to" and that you "Download your new video with captions as an MP4 file". Adobe's help and comparison pages read earlier in October 2026 add the detail: 17 spoken languages including Hindi, a 5-minute and 1 GB cap per video, and no watermark. SRT is not described. For short clips under five minutes, Adobe Express is the most generous free option in this list. See Adobe Express vs CapsAI.
Canva
Canva ranks in the top five for every head term in this space, but its feature and help pages returned HTTP 403 to our fetch on 18 October 2026, so the facts here come from Google's listing of those pages, not the pages themselves. The listing says the free tier includes "unlimited usage of captions with color, stylings and animations", the help page lists about 80 languages for auto-generated captions, and translation appears as "Translate (Pro)" on one page and as free on another. SRT download, watermark policy and video length limits are not stated in anything we could read.
Captions app
The Captions app's homepage (18 October 2026) says "Translate and subtitle in 100+ languages", "100+ caption styles" and "20M current users", and that "It's free to sign up for Captions, but you'll want a subscription to access the best features". The pricing page shows one caption template on Free versus 100+ on paid, no AI credits on Free, and a Max plan at $24.99 a month with a note that features and prices "reflect iOS plans only". Watermarks and export limits are not stated. The full breakdown is in our "Is Captions.ai free?" post and in Captions vs CapsAI.
Choppity
Choppity's caption page (18 October 2026) says the tool is "completely free for up to 1 hour of video content", with "no watermarks", uploads "up to 10GB", and captions in "40+ languages" including Hindi. Output is a burned-in MP4 ("Choppity bakes the captions directly into your finished MP4"); the page never states whether an SRT is available. Four presets are listed: minimal, word-by-word, karaoke and Hormozi-style, with 9:16, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5 export sizes. You need a free account to download.
ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs' subtitle generator page (20 October 2026) is titled "Generate Subtitles with AI — Accurate, Real-Time Subtitle Generator". Its uploader "Supports .mp4, .mov, and .mkv files up to 10 minute or 50MB", and the page says you can "Download subtitles in formats like SRT, VTT, TXT, DOCX, PDF, or JSON". It claims 99 languages, says the model "can instantly translate subtitles", answers "Absolutely" to real-time generation "for webinars, events, and virtual meetings", and promises you can "Customize fonts, colors, and layouts", but that page itself describes no burned-in video export. ElevenLabs' docs (read 21 October 2026) do: captions added to a video project in its Studio editor are rendered into the exported video, with a watermark on free-plan exports. When the demo finishes, its own text reads "Sign up for free to download or keep editing the subtitles". The sister caption generator page, same day, calls itself "The best free AI caption generator", says you can "create captions without a subscription" while "Paid plans unlock higher limits, advanced features, and API access", claims 90+ languages with the spoken language detected automatically, adds HTML to the export list, and tells you to style the text in CapCut or Premiere Pro. The word "watermark" appears on neither page. The pricing page shows a Free plan at $0 with 10k credits a month and Starter at $6 a month; neither page states how many subtitle minutes the Free plan covers. The developer docs for the Subtitles editor describe SRT and VTT export, rules for characters per line and cue duration, and a human subtitling service "from $2.20 per minute". Best pick in this list for a free subtitle file from a short clip; it is not a burned-in caption tool.
CapsAI
CapsAI does one thing: an MP4 or MOV up to 10 minutes goes in, and one MP4 with the captions burned in comes out, after you have checked every word, timing and style in the browser editor. It recognizes 11 spoken languages: English, Hinglish in Roman script, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi. It does not export SRT or VTT, and it does not translate. New accounts get 3 free minutes; packs are paid once, starting from $4 (₹49 in India, €4 in the euro area) for 20 minutes, with 1080p on Starter and up to 4K on Creator and Pro, and watermark-free export comes with every paid pack. It fits "clean captions on a short clip without a subscription"; it does not fit "I need a subtitle file". The best AI subtitle generator page lists both.
Five more, in one line each
- Caption X (studio page, 18 October 2026): "unlimited free exports" that "carry a small CaptionX watermark (Pro removes it)", an SRT that "is always watermark-free", uploads up to 10 minutes and under 2 GB, 100+ languages; the Pro price was not on the page we could read.
- AutoCaption (pricing page, 18 October 2026): paid plans at $18, $25 and $39 a month capped at 2, 3 and 6 minutes per video, each marked "No watermark"; the free tier's limits are not listed on the pricing page.
- Zeemo (pricing page, 18 October 2026): a free plan at US$0 with a 1 minute / 200 MB limit per video, 720p exports and 3-day storage, 95 caption languages claimed, Pro from US$8 a month. See Zeemo vs CapsAI.
- Media.io (pricing page, 18 October 2026): a 5-minute auto-subtitle trial at 720p marked "Export with watermark"; the paid prices did not render on the page.
- TurboScribe (read 17 October 2026): 3 free transcripts a day up to 30 minutes each, exports SRT, VTT, TXT, DOCX and PDF, files only with no burn-in.
Best for each job
- Long videos where you need an SRT: HappyScribe for the 10 free minutes and editor formats; Maestra if you need SCC, STL or TTML. Clipchamp if you want it free and only need SRT. ElevenLabs for a free SRT or VTT from a clip up to 10 minutes or 50 MB, after sign-up.
- Translation: VEED, Kapwing, HappyScribe and Maestra all translate; Kapwing gives 5 free minutes to test. ElevenLabs' FAQ also claims instant translation. CapsAI and Choppity do not translate.
- Short-form burned-in captions: Choppity for free footage up to an hour, Kapwing for creator templates with a subscription, CapsAI for a pay-once pack with every word editable before export.
- Pay-once budget: CapsAI's packs from $4 and Maestra's $12 pay-as-you-go are the only two here without a renewing plan. Compare on CapsAI's pricing page before you buy.
- Indian languages: CapsAI is the only tool in this list that names Hinglish as a spoken language and covers ten Indian languages; Adobe Express and Choppity name Hindi. The Indian language support comparison goes language by language.
- Free with no watermark: Adobe Express for clips under 5 minutes, Choppity for up to an hour, Clipchamp for an SRT. The free, no-watermark roundup has the fine print, and the free subtitle generator and no-watermark pages explain where CapsAI fits.
What to do next
If you need a subtitle file, start with HappyScribe's or Clipchamp's free allowance. If you need a clean burned-in clip and would rather not subscribe, upload a short MP4 at the best AI subtitle generator page, use the 3 free minutes to read the draft, and buy a pack only if the words come back right.
