Why are captions not working on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook?

Why captions don't show or vanish on TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Reels, the fix for each from their help pages (19 Oct 2026), and captions that always show.

Published 19 Oct 2026

Captions usually stop working for one of five reasons: the video has no captions to show, captions are switched off in your app or on that post, you are watching on a computer where the platform does not offer them, the video is a Facebook Reel, where Facebook's automated captions do not work, or the menu has moved in your version of the app. Each has a quick check below, taken from the platforms' help pages and RNID's caption guides as read on 19 October 2026.

If you are the creator and want captions that every viewer sees, whatever their settings, the fix that always works is to burn the captions into the video before you post. That section is at the end. For what each platform's built-in captions do when they are working, see platform auto captions compared.

Start with four quick checks

These apply on every platform, and they settle most cases in a minute.

  1. One video or every video? If captions are missing on one video only, the cause is that video: no captions were made, or the creator removed them. If they are missing everywhere, the cause is your settings or your device.
  2. Is the setting on, on this device? Facebook's help says its caption setting on a computer applies only "to videos you watch on a computer". Instagram's help says its captions feature is not available on computers.
  3. Is there speech to caption? Auto captions come from speech recognition. A video that is all music, or speech in a language the platform does not caption, has nothing to show.
  4. Has the menu moved? Menus differ between app versions. If a menu named here is missing, update the app and look again.

Volume is not the cause on Instagram: its help says captions "will show even if the volume on your device is on".

TikTok: why auto captions don't appear

TikTok's help center returned a server error when we tried to read it on 19 October 2026, so this section uses RNID's TikTok captions guide, last updated 16 June 2026, and an archived copy of TikTok's own accessibility page from 4 February 2026.

If you are watching

Long-press a clear part of the screen, choose Captions and translations, and switch Show captions on. If the label reads Show captions (unavailable), RNID explains that automatically generated captions are not available for that video. Your setting is fine; there is nothing to show.

If it is your video

TikTok generates captions automatically for uploaded videos, in the language you choose under More options, then Select video language, before posting. TikTok says "eligible videos" then show captions in that language, without listing what makes a video eligible, so captions can be missing when:

  • The video was not eligible, or the wrong language was set. Check the video language before you post the next one.
  • The captions were removed. Edit captions on the posted video can remove some lines or all of them.
  • The speech is unclear or there is none. Music-only videos and heavy background noise give the recognizer little to work with.

RNID also found, in its own tests, that TikTok's automatic captions worked only in the mobile app, not on the website on a computer. For how TikTok's built-in captions compare with burned-in captions, see TikTok's built-in captions vs a caption tool.

Instagram Reels: captions missing or off

Instagram's help page on reels and video captions starts with the most common cause: captions on reels and videos "may not be available to everyone". The same page says the feature "isn't available on computers". If you are on a laptop, switch to the phone app.

If you are watching

  • From a reel: tap Options, then Closed captions, then Always show closed captions.
  • From settings: go to your profile, tap the menu, then Accessibility and translations, then Captions and translations, and choose Always show closed captions.

Two details explain odd behavior. Instagram says the default caption language depends on your device's language settings, so check those if captions appear in an unexpected language. And captions on video ads in your feed cannot be adjusted at all.

If it is your reel

Closed captions are a per-post setting. For a reel already posted, open it, tap Options, then Edit, and look for the closed captions toggle under More options or Advanced settings, depending on the app version. Instagram says captions show automatically on posts you share "unless you turn them off", and that older reels follow your caption settings.

If you burned captions into the video, turn Instagram's off for that reel. RNID warns the automated captions "will overlap" captions that are already in the video, making both hard to read. How Instagram's closed captions compare with burned-in captions is covered on the Instagram Reels caption generator page.

Facebook Reels: captions that vanish

Facebook Reels is where captions most often seem to vanish, and the reason is simple. RNID's Facebook captions guide, last updated 16 June 2026, says automated captions "do not currently work on Facebook Reels". It adds that if the person who posted a video turned automated captions off, "you won't be able to see captions".

For other Facebook videos, check your setting. Facebook's help page on captions gives two paths:

  • On a computer: click your profile picture, then Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Media, and turn on Always Show Captions. Facebook notes this setting applies only to videos you watch on a computer.
  • On iPhone: Facebook follows the phone's setting. Open the iPhone's Settings, then Accessibility, then Subtitles & Captioning, and turn on Closed Captions + SDH.

Facebook also says plainly that "not all videos on Facebook have captions". Automatic captions are offered for videos posted to a Page, through Video Options on a computer. RNID says Facebook does not generate captions for videos on a personal profile or in the news feed; there, the poster has to add an .srt file from a computer. The options for creators, including paid captioning services, are in Facebook video captions: services vs tools.

Why captions disappear from a video that had them

If captions were there yesterday and are gone today, one of these changed:

  • The creator edited the post. TikTok's Edit captions can remove lines or all captions, and Instagram's closed captions toggle can be switched off after posting.
  • You changed device. Facebook's computer setting does not follow you to the phone, and Instagram's help says its captions feature is not available on computers.
  • Your app updated. A setting can reset or move after an update. Check it again where this guide describes it.

YouTube has its own causes, such as captions that are still processing. Those are covered in YouTube auto captions missing or late.

The fix that always works: burned-in captions

Every fix above depends on something you do not control as a creator: the viewer's setting, their device, whether the platform supports your language, or whether it captions that format at all. Burned-in captions remove all of those. The words are part of the video frames, so they show for every viewer on every device, and they stay when the video is downloaded or shared.

To burn captions in with CapsAI:

  1. Open the uploader with English selected, or choose the language spoken. There are 11: English, Hinglish, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi.
  2. Upload the MP4 or MOV, up to 10 minutes per video.
  3. Read the draft against the audio and fix any wrong words, names and numbers.
  4. Choose a style and a position clear of the app's buttons.
  5. Export the MP4 and upload it to TikTok, Instagram or Facebook yourself. CapsAI does not post for you.

Then switch the platform's own captions off for that post, so the two sets do not overlap. For a video you already posted, adding captions after posting covers what each platform allows and how to re-upload.

There is a trade-off. Burned-in captions cannot be switched off, resized or read by a screen reader the way a caption track can. Burned-in captions vs closed captions explains when to use both.

Frequently asked questions

Why are captions not working on TikTok?

Either the video has no automatic captions or your setting is off. Long-press the video, choose Captions and translations, and switch Show captions on. If it says Show captions (unavailable), the video has none, for example because it was not eligible for auto captions or the creator removed them. RNID also found TikTok's captions worked only in the mobile app.

Why are captions not working on Instagram?

Instagram says captions on reels and videos may not be available to everyone and are not available on computers. In the app, tap Options on a reel, then Closed captions, then Always show closed captions. If one reel still has none, the creator may have turned closed captions off for that post.

Why do captions disappear on Facebook Reels?

RNID's Facebook guide, updated 16 June 2026, says Facebook's automated captions do not currently work on Reels, and that you cannot see captions if the poster turned them off. For other videos, turn on Always Show Captions under Settings and Media on a computer, or Closed Captions + SDH in iPhone settings.

Why can't I see captions on my computer?

Instagram's help page says its captions feature is not available on computers, so use the phone app. Facebook's caption setting on a computer applies only to videos watched on a computer, so check it there separately. RNID found TikTok's automatic captions appeared only in the mobile app in its tests.

Why did captions disappear from a video that had them?

The creator may have edited the post, since TikTok's Edit captions can remove captions and Instagram's closed captions can be switched off after posting. You may also have changed device, as Facebook's computer setting does not apply on a phone, or an app update may have reset or moved the setting.

How do I make captions show for every viewer?

Burn them into the video before you post. Burned-in captions are part of the picture, so they do not depend on viewer settings, device or language support. CapsAI does this from an uploaded MP4 or MOV up to 10 minutes and exports an MP4 that you upload yourself; then turn the platform's own captions off for that post.
