Descript Alternative for Captions

Descript is a full editor: you edit video by editing its transcript, record in its Rooms, clone your voice and export subtitle files. If you pay for it mostly to put captions on short clips, CapsAI does that part on one-time packs. Upload an MP4 or MOV of up to 10 minutes, choose the spoken language, fix the words, pick one of 37 animated caption styles and export an MP4 with the captions burned in, with AI sound effects if you want them. One thing first: CapsAI takes video only. Audio files such as MP3 or WAV are not supported, so export your podcast or voiceover as a video before you upload. For long recordings, Smart-Clips turns a video of up to 120 minutes into captioned 9:16 clips. Descript facts here come from descript.com and its help center, read on 19 October 2026.

How it works

How it works

  1. Step 1

Export a video, not an audio file

If the clip lives in Descript, export it as an MP4 without captions. Audio-only files are not accepted, so give an audio podcast a video track first, even a still image.

  2. Step 2

Keep each upload under 10 minutes

Captions run on videos up to 10 minutes. For a full episode, use Smart-Clips instead (up to 120 minutes) and caption the clips it finds.

  3. Step 3

Choose the language and read the draft

Pick the spoken language, then fix names, terms and numbers. Type a new start or end time to move a caption, or split a long one.

  4. Step 4

    Pick an animated style

Preview all 37 styles on your clip; 8 export free and 29 with any pack. Set 1 to 4 words per frame and the vertical position.

  5. Step 5

    Add sound effects and export

Optionally run AI Sound Effects, adjust what it placed, then export one MP4 with the captions and sounds burned in.

Questions

Is there a free alternative to Descript for captions?

Descript has its own free plan: 1 media hour a month, with exports at 720p and a watermark (19 October 2026). CapsAI gives a new account 3 free minutes, also with a watermark, then one-time packs from $4 for 20 minutes. For a few clips a month, a $4 pack costs less than one month of Hobbyist at $16 billed yearly or $24 monthly.

Is CapCut better than Descript?

They suit different jobs. CapCut is a timeline editor with templates, effects, music and mobile apps; Descript edits video through its transcript and fits podcasts, interviews and tutorials. For captions alone, our CapCut alternative page compares CapCut with CapsAI.

Does Descript have animated captions?

Yes. Its caption presets can be restyled with font, colors, gradients, strokes, an active-word highlight and line animations, per its help center on 19 October 2026. The difference is the job around them: Descript is a full editor, and CapsAI only captions, with 37 ready styles and nothing else to learn.

Can I upload an MP3 or WAV?

No. CapsAI captions video only, as MP4 or MOV. Export the audio as a video first, for example over a still image, then upload that. Descript imports WAV, MP3, AIFF, M4A, FLAC, OPUS and AAC, so for audio-only work it is the better fit.

Can I export an SRT file or a transcript?

No. CapsAI exports one MP4 with the captions burned in and has no transcript, SRT or VTT download. Descript exports SRT or VTT with optional speaker labels, so use it when you need a file for a platform's caption track.

Is there a watermark?

Exports from CapsAI's 3 free minutes carry a CapsAI watermark; watermark-free export comes with every paid pack. Descript's free plan exports at 720p with a watermark, and its paid plans export without one.

Which languages can it caption?

Eleven spoken languages: English, Hinglish, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi, with no translation. Descript's help center lists 26 transcription languages in the Latin alphabet, with Hindi in beta, and Descript can translate captions into 61.

Can I caption a full podcast episode?

Not in one upload, because captions run on videos up to 10 minutes. Upload the episode to Smart-Clips instead, up to 120 minutes, and it returns scored 9:16 clips with simple captions. Smart-Clips minutes are deducted for the full recording, and each clip you open in the caption editor uses caption minutes for its length.

Does it label speakers?

No. CapsAI has no speaker labels and one caption track per video. Descript detects speakers and lets you give each one its own captions layer.

When Descript is more than you need

Descript earns its subscription when you use its core idea: editing a video by editing the transcript, cutting filler words, fixing a line with Regenerate, recording guests in a Room and exporting a subtitle file. If your month instead looks like ten short clips that each need captions before they go to Reels or Shorts, most of that goes unused.

CapsAI is built for that narrower month. It has no cutting tools, no transcript editing and no recorder. You upload a finished clip, correct the words, pick an animated style and export. Packs are bought once and do not renew, so a quiet month costs nothing.

Podcast clips: Smart-Clips, then styled captions

Many Descript users in this position are podcasters, and here the workflow has two steps. Upload the full video episode, up to 120 minutes, to Smart-Clips; it proposes clips, scores them, reframes them to 9:16 and adds simple white captions. Then open the clips you want in the caption editor to restyle them and add sound effects.

Two minute balances are involved. Smart-Clips minutes are deducted for the whole recording, and the caption editor uses caption minutes for each clip's length. An audio-only episode has to become a video first. Descript's own Create clips tool does a similar first step inside its editor, using AI credits.

What you give up by leaving Descript

Be clear about the trade before you cancel anything. CapsAI has no text-based editing, no recording, no AI voice cloning or Regenerate, no Studio Sound, no speaker labels, no translation and no SRT, VTT or transcript export, and it does not accept audio files. Descript has all of these. If you rely on even one of them, keep Descript and use CapsAI only for the clips that need a styled caption look.
