CapCut Alternative for Auto Captions
If you open CapCut for one job, auto captions on a short video, CapsAI does that job in any phone or desktop browser. Upload an MP4 or MOV of up to 10 minutes, choose the spoken language, fix any word or timing, pick one of 37 caption styles and export an MP4 with the captions burned in. AI Sound Effects can also place sounds on your caption words. You pay once, with packs from $4 (₹49 in India, €4 in the euro area), instead of keeping a monthly Pro plan, and 3 free minutes let you test it first. This page compares the two for captions only, using CapCut's own pages, read through a proxy render on 19 October 2026. CapCut is still the better tool for full editing, effects, music and templates, and it has a browser editor too.
Start with 3 free minutes. Watermark-free export comes with every paid pack.

What the captions look like
Hook with a highlighted word
Stop typing your captions by hand.
The look many people build in CapCut: heavy white caps with the spoken word in color. Poppins Italic does it free in orange; Pop Out, a Pro style, uses green.
Word by word
Save. This. Recipe.
Set Words per frame to 1 with Ice (free) or Color Blend (Pro) and each word lands on its own beat. It suits fast talk and list videos.
Boxed caption over busy footage
Three things I wish I knew before moving abroad
Newsroom, a free style, puts white caps on black boxes, so the line stays readable over a bright street or a busy kitchen. The box color is fixed.
Punchline with a sound
And that was the last time I trusted the GPS.
With the Funny vibe, AI Sound Effects may place a short sound on a line like this. Move it, swap it for another of the 193 sounds, turn it down or delete it.

CapsAI figures are from capsai.co the same day. CapCut says its displayed pricing is for reference only, so check both pricing pages before you buy.

How it works
How it works
Step 1
Export your edit without captions
If you still cut in CapCut or your phone's editor, export the finished clip as an MP4 or MOV with no captions on it, up to 10 minutes long.
Step 2
Upload and choose the spoken language
Sign in with Google or an email code, drop the file in and choose the language spoken. Nothing is translated.
Step 3
Read the draft against the audio
Fix names, slang and numbers word by word. Type a new start or end time to move a caption, or split a long one in two.
Step 4
Pick a style and a position
Preview any of the 37 styles on your own clip; eight export free and the rest need any pack. Place the captions between the middle and the lower part of the frame.
Step 5
Add sound effects, then export
Optionally run AI Sound Effects, choose a vibe and a density, and adjust what it placed. Export one MP4 with the captions and sounds inside it.
Choose your spoken language

Questions
Is there a free CapCut alternative for auto captions?
CapsAI gives a new account 3 free minutes, enough to test a short clip; those exports carry a CapsAI watermark. After that, packs are paid once: 20 minutes for $4, 60 for $9 and 180 for $19 (₹49, ₹99 and ₹299 in India; €4, €9 and €19 in the euro area). CapCut's caption page, read through a proxy on 19 October 2026, still calls its speech to text free of charge, but its Standard vs Pro help article (2 April 2026) lists auto captions as a Pro AI tool.
Why are people leaving CapCut?
The complaints we could check are about price and the Pro label. CapCut Pro was listed at USD 19.99 a month on 19 October 2026, and 2024 reviews on its App Store listing object to features moving behind Pro. CapCut's own pages disagree on auto captions: its Standard vs Pro help article (2 April 2026, read through a proxy render on 19 October 2026) lists them among Pro's advanced AI tools, while its caption page still says free of charge.
Does it work on a PC, a Mac or an iPhone?
Yes, in the browser on each of them. On a computer there is no desktop app to install; on a phone you pick a video from your camera roll, edit in the mobile editor and download the MP4. There is no iPhone or Android app.
Does it take MOV files from an iPhone?
Yes. MOV and MP4 are both accepted, up to 10 minutes per video and 500 MB on the free minutes or 10 GB with a pack. The export is an MP4 that keeps your clip's shape, so vertical stays vertical.
Is there a watermark?
Exports from the 3 free minutes carry a CapsAI watermark. Watermark-free export comes with every paid pack, starting with Starter at $4 for 20 minutes. Pro caption styles also need a pack to export, though you can preview all of them free.
How many minutes will I need?
Minutes count the length of the videos you caption, so Starter's 20 minutes covers about twenty one-minute clips. A project's first export is included; exporting again costs the video's length. Projects are kept 3, 7 or 15 days by pack, so download your MP4.
Can CapsAI translate captions or give me an SRT file?
No. Captions come out in the language spoken, and the only output is an MP4 with the captions burned in. CapCut's caption page says it can translate captions into a target language, so for translated subtitles CapCut is the better fit.
Which languages does CapsAI caption?
Eleven spoken languages: English, Hinglish, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi. You choose the language before captioning. CapCut's page says "multiple languages" without a list and detects the language itself.
What does CapCut do better?
Nearly everything that is not captions: trimming, cropping, music, effects, transitions, templates and translated captions. CapsAI cannot cut or resize a video and has no music, so if your edit lives in CapCut anyway, its own captions may be all you need.
Who switches, and who should stay
This page is for people whose CapCut routine is short: drop in a finished clip, open Text, tap Auto captions, restyle the words and export. CapsAI keeps only that job: you upload, read the draft, choose a style and export. You give up cutting, music, effects and templates, and get a tool that only captions, runs in any browser and charges for the minutes you caption.
Stay with CapCut if you edit the video there anyway, need translated captions or rely on its templates and music. Its online editor, read through a proxy render on 19 October 2026, also exports MP4 or MOV at up to 4K.
Why people are leaving CapCut: price and the Pro label
CapCut's pricing page lists Free, Pro at USD 19.99 a month or USD 179.99 a year, Ultra at USD 79 a month and Teams from USD 12.49 per seat, all marked as reference prices. Pro buys 1,200 monthly AI credits, all premium templates and all premium Pro features.
The friction shows up in reviews. On CapCut's App Store listing, read on 19 October 2026, a 2024 review titled "STOP MAKING EVERYTHING PRO!" objects to features moving behind Pro, and another calls the Pro prices high. CapCut's help center, in an article comparing Standard and Pro dated 2 April 2026 and read through a proxy render on 19 October 2026, lists "camera tracking, auto captions, AI avatars, and AI-generated content" as Pro's advanced AI tools, while Standard gets noise reduction, loudness adjustment and basic effects. Descript's post from April 2026, updated in July, says the same, and users have reported it since mid-2024: in our count of 161 Reddit threads about subtitle tools, 21 include a post saying CapCut's auto captions had become paid or limited. Yet CapCut's caption tool page still says speech to text is free of charge. CapCut's own pages disagree, so export a test clip and see whether your account asks for Pro.
Caption looks people make in CapCut, and the closest styles here
CapCut's templates do not carry over, but the looks do. Highlighted spoken word: Poppins Italic (free, orange), Pop Out (Pro, green), Tommy (Pro, pink) or Neue Black (Pro, cyan). One word at a time: Ice (free), Color Blend or Across (Pro) with Words per frame set to 1. Boxes behind the words: Newsroom (free, black boxes) or Tommy Soft (free, dark pills). Comic outlined caps: Beast (free).
Fonts come with each style: there is no font upload and no free color picker. Seven styles take a color from 12 swatches, and one pick sets the text and the highlight together. If you depend on a CapCut font or template that has no match here, that is a fair reason to stay.
