Premiere Pro Captions Alternative

Premiere Pro captions are built into the editor: Speech to Text transcribes the sequence, Create captions from transcript turns that transcript into a caption track, and the export dialog writes the result as burned-in text, embedded 608/708 data or a sidecar file such as SRT. Adobe's help pages, read on 30 October 2026, describe all of this for the desktop app it now calls Premiere, sold at US$22.99 a month on an annual plan. This page is for two other situations: you want animated social captions on a short clip without designing caption styles, or you need captions today on a computer or phone that has no Premiere installed. CapsAI is a browser tool for exactly that. Upload one MP4 or MOV of up to 10 minutes, correct the words, pick one of 37 caption styles and download an MP4 with the captions burned in. Packs are paid once, $4, $9 or $19 (₹49, ₹99, ₹299 in India; €4, €9, €19 in the euro area). It produces no SRT and no caption file of any kind, so when a client wants a sidecar, stay in Premiere.

Premiere figures come from helpx.adobe.com (Create captions and Export caption tracks articles updated 7 Jan 2026, Speech to Text 2 Jun 2026, language packs 5 Mar 2026, supported languages 22 Aug 2025, Single Word 18 Aug 2026, mobile captions 10 Oct 2025) read through a text render on 30 October 2026 because the help site blocks direct fetches, and from adobe.com plans and product pages read directly the same day. CapsAI figures come from capsai.co the same day.

  • No subscription: packs of 20, 60 or 180 minutes from $4 (₹49 in India, €4 in the euro area), paid once
  • 37 caption styles with built-in motion, previewed on your clip instead of built from presets

How it works

How it works

  1. Step 1

Name the deliverable before you choose the tool

If a client, platform or broadcaster wants an SRT, an .scc or embedded 608/708 captions, Premiere's export dialog writes those and CapsAI does not. If the deliverable is an MP4 with styled captions for Reels, Shorts or TikTok, carry on here.

  2. Step 2

Get a clip under 10 minutes as MP4 or MOV

Export the finished cut from your editor as a plain MP4 without captions, or use the clip as your phone recorded it; iPhone HEVC .MOV files are accepted. One video per upload, 500 MB on free minutes and 10 GB once you hold a pack.

  3. Step 3

Upload in a browser and choose the spoken language

Open capsai.co in Safari on an iPhone, Chrome on Android or any desktop browser, sign in with Google or an email code and upload. Pick the language that is spoken, one of 11. A new account carries 3 free minutes, which covers a test clip.

  4. Step 4

Read the draft and fix the words

Correct names, brand terms and numbers in place. To move a caption, type a new start or end time in seconds; split a line that runs too long. Captions come out in the language spoken, so there is no translate step.

  5. Step 5

Pick a style, then export one MP4

Preview all 37 styles on your own footage, set words per frame and vertical position, add Emoji Sync or AI Sound Effects if the clip wants them, and export. Watermark-free export comes with every paid pack, at 1080p on Starter and up to 4K on Creator and Pro.

Questions

How do I add captions in Premiere Pro?

Transcribe first, then convert. In Premiere, select Window > Text, open the Transcript tab and run Generate static transcript with the spoken language set (download the language pack if asked). Then choose Captions > Create captions from transcript, pick a preset such as Subtitle, a format, a style and the line settings, and the captions appear as a track aligned with the dialogue. Our how-to post walks through each dialog with Adobe's current menu names.

Does Premiere Pro auto caption in Hindi or Hinglish?

Hindi yes, Hinglish no. Adobe's supported-languages page (updated 22 August 2025) lists 18 languages for Speech to Text, and Hindi is one of them, installed as a downloadable pack. Mixed Hindi and English is not on that list, and the Premiere mobile captions article warns that "Mixing of English with other local languages may result in inaccurate captions." CapsAI has a dedicated Hinglish model and nine other Indian languages, with captions written in the script the speaker uses.

How much does Premiere Pro cost if I only need captions?

US$22.99 a month on the annual plan billed monthly, according to Adobe's plans page on 30 October 2026, with a 7-day trial that converts to a paid membership unless cancelled. For captions alone on short clips, a CapsAI Starter pack is $4 for 20 minutes, paid once, and a Pro pack is $19 for 180 minutes.

Can CapsAI give me an SRT to drop into Premiere?

No. CapsAI exports one MP4 with the captions burned in and has no SRT, VTT or TXT download. If you need a caption file for Premiere, a platform upload or a broadcaster, run Speech to Text in Premiere and export a sidecar from there; its export dialog offers .srt, .scc, .mcc, .xml and .stl.

Can I get one-word-at-a-time captions like Premiere's Single Word layout?

Yes. Premiere added a Single Word layout to the Create Captions dialog (help page updated 18 August 2026) that puts one word on screen at a time. In CapsAI, choose a word-by-word style such as Ice, Color Blend or Across and the timing comes from the speech recognition; set one word per frame for the same effect.

Is there a free Premiere plugin for animated captions?

Capkit is one: a free plugin for Premiere and After Effects that generates captions as editable layers on the timeline, with Hinglish support. CapsAI has no plugin and never touches your Premiere project; it runs in a browser and returns a finished MP4. Our Capkit alternative page compares the two routes for Hinglish clips.

Do I need Premiere on the machine I am using?

Not for CapsAI. It runs in Safari on an iPhone, Chrome on Android and any desktop browser, with nothing to install. Adobe also offers a free Premiere mobile app on iPhone and Android with its own auto-captions, which the help article says rely on the language settings of your iOS device.

What does CapsAI not do that Premiere does?

Quite a lot, by design. There are no cutting tools, no multi-track editing, no speaker labels, no translation and no caption file export. Each upload is one video of up to 10 minutes, and speech recognition covers 11 languages against Premiere's 18.

Why are my Premiere Pro auto captions not working?

The usual causes are a transcript that was never turned into a caption track, a language pack that has not finished downloading, a wrong Audio analysis setting so the dialogue track is skipped, or an export where the caption track was not set to burn in or sidecar. Our troubleshooting post maps each symptom to the Adobe page that governs it.

What Premiere does with captions, from Adobe's own pages

Captioning in Premiere is a two-step job. Speech to Text produces a transcript, either when you import with Automatic Transcription selected or later from Window > Text, with speaker labelling, a choice of audio track and In to Out transcription as options. Then Create captions from transcript places a caption track using a preset, a format, a saved style and your settings for characters per line, duration, gap and one or two lines. Since the August 2026 update to the help pages, a Single Word layout puts one word on screen at a time.

Export is where Premiere pulls ahead of any social caption tool. Captions can be rendered onto the video, embedded as CEA-608 or CEA-708 data or one OP-47 stream, or written as sidecar .scc, .mcc, .xml, .stl or .srt files. Speech to Text covers 18 languages, with English in the install and the others as packs downloaded from the Language menu, and the product page says captions can be translated into 18 languages.

When to stay in Premiere

Stay when the video is long, when the deliverable is a caption file or broadcast caption data, when the edit and the captions move together on one timeline, or when the speech is in a language Premiere lists and CapsAI does not, such as Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French or German, or when you need speaker labels or translated tracks. CapsAI accepts a maximum of 10 minutes per upload, writes nothing but a burned-in MP4 and translates nothing, so none of those jobs fit it.

When a browser caption tool fits

The gap this page fills is the short clip at the end of the day. Building an animated look in Premiere means designing and saving text styles; CapsAI ships 37 looks, 8 free and 29 with any pack, and you pick one from a live preview on your footage. The other gap is access. A plan tied to one installed desktop app does not help on a client's laptop, a locked-down office machine or a phone, and CapsAI opens in the browser on all three with nothing to install.

There is also the language gap. Premiere's list has Hindi but not Hinglish, and none of Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada or Punjabi. CapsAI recognises all of them plus English, and writes the captions in the language spoken. CapsAI's English has been used most on Indian English; for other accents, run your own clip through the 3 free minutes and read the draft.

A subscription against packs paid once

Adobe prices Premiere at US$22.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, and the trial converts to a paid membership after seven days unless you cancel. For an editor, that fee buys the whole editor and is not a captions cost at all. For someone who only needs the captions, CapsAI's packs are $4 for 20 minutes, $9 for 60 and $19 for 180 (₹49, ₹99, ₹299 in India; €4, €9, €19 in the euro area), bought once, with projects kept for 3, 7 or 15 days by pack. A quiet month costs nothing because nothing renews.
