Opus Clip Alternative
Opus Clip turns long videos into short clips, and so does Smart-Clips, the clip finder inside CapsAI. Upload an MP4 or MOV recording of up to 120 minutes, optionally tell it what to look for in up to 500 characters, and choose a clip length. Smart-Clips finds moments, gives each one a score with the reasons behind it, reframes it to vertical 9:16 and burns in simple white captions. Open any clip in the CapsAI editor to fix words, switch to one of 37 caption styles and add AI sound effects. It does less than Opus Clip in places, and this page says where: no YouTube or link import, no scheduler or posting, no team workspace and 9:16 output only. Opus Clip facts come from opus.pro and its help center, read on 19 October 2026.
Start with 3 free minutes. Watermark-free export comes with every paid pack.

What the captions look like
A prompt for a podcast episode
Find clips about pricing mistakes first-time founders make
Name a topic, not a timestamp. Smart-Clips looks for matching moments and still scores each one.
The hook a clip should open on
Most people get this wrong in their first year.
A reason such as a strong hook tells you why a clip ranked high. Read the reasons before you pick instead of trusting the top score.
Simple white caption, as cut
So we doubled the price and lost nobody.
Every clip comes back with plain white captions burned in. That is enough for a quick post straight from the results page.
The same line, restyled
So we doubled the price and lost nobody.
In the editor, Pop Out (Pro) highlights each word as it is spoken, and Poppins Italic does a similar highlight free. A clip opened in the editor uses caption minutes for its own length.

How it works
How it works
Step 1
Upload the full recording
Drop an MP4 or MOV of up to 120 minutes on the Smart-Clips page. There is no YouTube or link import, so download your own recording first. Smart-Clips minutes are taken for the file's full length, so check your balance.
Step 2
Tell it what to look for
Optionally type a topic in "Find clips about...", choose Auto or a target length, and leave the language on Auto-detect or pick one of the 11.
Step 3
Review the scored clips
Clips come back reframed to 9:16 with simple white captions, a score and the reasons for it. Play the top few and keep the ones that stand alone.
Step 4
Download, or open in the editor
Download a clip as it is, or select clips and open them in the caption editor. Each opened clip uses caption minutes for its own length, not the whole recording.
Step 5
Restyle, add sound, export
Fix names and numbers, pick one of 37 caption styles, run AI Sound Effects if you want them, and export the MP4.

Questions
Is Opus Clip worth it?
It can be if you clip often and use what it bundles: link import, posting, a scheduler, team seats and 1:1 or 16:9 output on Pro. On 19 October 2026, Starter was $15 a month for 150 credits and Pro $29 a month for 300, at one credit per minute of source video. If you upload your own files and only need vertical clips with captions, Smart-Clips covers that job without the extras.
Is there something better than Opus Clip?
It depends on what you clip. For podcasts and talking-head recordings you already have as files, Smart-Clips gives scored 9:16 clips and a full caption editor afterwards. For YouTube links, scheduling, team review or several aspect ratios, Opus Clip does more, and those are good reasons to stay.
Is there a free alternative to OpusClip?
Opus Clip has its own free plan: 60 credits a month, clips up to 1080p with a watermark, no editing, and clips exportable for 3 days. On CapsAI, Smart-Clips uses its own minute balance shown in your workspace, and the caption editor gives a new account 3 free minutes, whose exports carry a CapsAI watermark.
Do clips exported from the editor carry a watermark?
Clips you open in the CapsAI caption editor follow the editor's rule: watermark-free export comes with every paid pack, and exports from the 3 free caption minutes carry a CapsAI watermark. Opus Clip's free plan says "Has watermark", and its Starter and Pro plans remove it.
How do minutes work on CapsAI?
There are two balances. Smart-Clips minutes pay for finding clips and are deducted for the full length of the recording. Caption minutes pay for each clip you open in the editor, by that clip's length, in packs of 20, 60 or 180 minutes for $4, $9 or $19 (₹49, ₹99, ₹299 in India; €4, €9, €19 in the euro area).
Can I paste a YouTube link?
No. Smart-Clips takes an MP4 or MOV file only. Opus Clip's help center lists links from YouTube, Zoom, Google Drive, Vimeo, Rumble, Twitch and others, although its pricing page shows only local video for the Free and Starter plans.
Does it work for podcast clips?
Yes, if the podcast is a video file. Upload the full episode, use the prompt to point at a topic or a guest, and keep the strongest scored moments. Audio-only files such as MP3 or WAV are not supported, so export the episode as video first.
Which languages does it handle?
Smart-Clips detects the spoken language or lets you pick from 11: English, Hinglish, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Punjabi. Captions come out in the language spoken. Opus Clip's help center lists over 25 languages, most in beta, without Hindi.
Can I schedule or post clips from CapsAI?
No. You download the MP4s and post them yourself to TikTok, Reels or Shorts. Opus Clip posts to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram from its Starter plan and adds a scheduler on Pro.
How Smart-Clips picks moments
Smart-Clips reads the recording and proposes moments that can stand alone as short clips. A prompt such as "pricing advice" or "funny moments" steers it, and the length setting sets the target: Auto lets it choose between about 15 and 90 seconds, or you can ask for clips near 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds. Each clip gets a score out of 100, a breakdown into hook, payoff, clarity, emotion, shareability and more, and a written reason, so you can see why one moment ranked above another.
Treat the score as a sorting aid, not a promise of views. Watch the top clips, check that each opens on a complete thought, and drop any that need context from earlier in the episode. Opus Clip's Virality Score rests on a similar idea: a 0 to 99 rating built from hook, flow, value and trend, on its Starter and Pro plans.
From simple captions to 37 styles and AI sound effects
Clips arrive with simple white captions. To go further, select clips and open them in the caption editor: correct any word, change a caption's timing, pick one of 37 styles (8 free, 29 with any pack) and add AI emoji on the Creator and Pro packs. AI Sound Effects reads the caption words and places sounds from a library of 193 in six categories. Choose a vibe (Auto, Funny, Dramatic or Minimal) and a density, then move, swap or delete what it placed. It picks from that library rather than generating new sounds; Opus Clip's Auto SFX, on Pro and Business, can generate one from a text prompt.
What Opus Clip does that Smart-Clips does not
Opus Clip is a broader product. Its help center lists link imports from YouTube, Zoom, Google Drive, Vimeo, Rumble, Twitch, LinkedIn, Dropbox, Riverside and more, and source videos up to 10 hours. Its plans add posting to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram, a scheduler, team workspaces, custom fonts, export to Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and square or 16:9 output. If any of those is part of your week, stay with Opus Clip. Smart-Clips suits people who have the recording as a file, want vertical clips with captions they can restyle, and post by hand.
