Add Captions to a Video
Adding captions comes down to three decisions: which language is spoken, how the words should look, and where they sit on screen. CapsAI does the typing and the timing, so your minutes go into those decisions instead of a transcript.
Start with 3 free minutes. Free exports may include a CapsAI watermark.
Upload Video
For best results, upload a video with clear speech. You can review and edit the captions after generation.
Drag and drop video or
Accepted formats: MP4 and MOV, with a 9:16, 16:9 & 1:1 aspect ratio supported only.
What the captions look like
Phone video in portrait (9:16)
Keep captions in the middle third of the frame.
Reels and Shorts buttons cover the right edge and the bottom of the screen.
Laptop screen recording (16:9)
Place captions low, but above anything the viewer needs to click or read.
Check that menus and code on screen stay visible.
Two-person interview
Start a new caption line whenever the speaker changes.
Mixed lines are the most common reason viewers lose track.
What you get
- No timeline editing: you correct text, the timing follows
- Styles built for vertical video
- Works from a phone browser
- The same upload can be restyled for another platform
Where it helps
- A Reel or Short that has to make sense on mute
- A tutorial where viewers skim for one step
- An interview clip shared on LinkedIn
How it works
How it works
Step 1
Finish the edit first
Captions are timed to the audio you upload. If you trim after captioning, the timing no longer matches.
Step 2
Upload the MP4 or MOV
Upload from your phone or computer. Keep the tab open while the file uploads and processes.
Step 3
Choose the spoken language
Select the language people speak in the video. Use Hinglish when speakers switch between Hindi and English.
Step 4
Check names, numbers and line length
Correct anything the speech model misheard and keep each caption to one or two short lines.
Step 5
Position, style and export
Move captions clear of faces and on-screen text, pick a style, then export the captioned MP4.

Questions
Can I add captions from my phone?
Yes. CapsAI runs in modern mobile browsers. Keep the browser tab open while the video uploads and processes.
How do I add captions to a YouTube video I already published?
Upload your original video file to create a captioned version. Subtitle tracks that viewers switch on and off are added separately in YouTube Studio.
What is the difference between Instagram captions and burned-in captions?
Instagram adds its own captions inside the app with limited styling. Burned-in captions are part of the video picture, so they look the same everywhere the file is posted.
How long does it take?
It depends on the length of the video. Longer videos take longer to process, so trim before you upload.
Will my export have a watermark?
Free exports may include a CapsAI watermark. Watermark-free export is included with paid minute packs.
Three ways to put captions on a video
Platform auto-captions are free and quick, but you have little control over style or accuracy. Caption files such as SRT or VTT let viewers switch captions on and off on YouTube or a website. Burned-in captions are drawn into the video, so they always show, in your style, on every platform.
For short vertical video, burned-in captions are the usual choice because many viewers watch without sound and never open caption settings.
Make captions easy to read
Keep one or two lines on screen at a time, use strong contrast between text and outline, and keep captions away from faces, buttons and on-screen text.
